Hussein - Are You?

I saw this phenom around the blog here a few months back, as it was spreading viral:
... a growing band of supporters of Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who are expressing solidarity with him by informally adopting his middle name. The result is a group of unlikely-sounding Husseins: Jewish and Catholic, Hispanic and Asian and Italian-American, from Jaime Hussein Alvarez of Washington, D.C., to Kelly Hussein Crowley of Norman, Okla., to Sarah Beth Hussein Frumkin of Chicago.

And I found this tidbit ironic-- if you know Harding (which I attended for a few memorable years in the 80's) you would too:
Some Obama supporters say they were moved to action because of what their own friends, neighbors and relatives were saying about their candidate. Mark Elrod, a political science professor at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., is organizing students and friends to declare their Husseinhood on Facebook on Aug. 4, Mr. Obama's birthday.
Originating at Harding, haha-- that's quite a camel nose under the tent.

I am Spartacus (2.00 / 1)

A modern version of I am Spartacus perhaps, but with a happy ending we hope.

Don't underestimate what favors this does the US in the rest of the world. In terms of branding, having a Hebrew first name, a classic Arabic second name, and then a Japanese town as your surname - it doesn't get much better for global reach.

Good thing that there's substance there too

Re: Hussein - Are You? (none / 0)

Harding is an ultra-conservative Christian (Church of Christ) school.  While it is not the most conservative (I think Freed-Hardeman is the most), there are very few people there who would be willing to follow anyone without an R by their name.  I go to the Church of Christ and am amazed by the lack of rational political thinking displayed by my fellow parishioners.  Two quick examples...I asked a good friend of mine if Bush and the Arnold (we are in Cali) messing up the economy has caused him to rethink his allegiance to the Republican party. He replied, "No, it just makes me want to vote Republican even more so that these policies will work."  What???
In 2004, my pastor came over while I was watching one of the Prez debates.  Kerry was on the screen.  We started talking and he said, "I'm not happy with Bush.  I don't like him, but Kerry scares me.  That guy scares me."

Re: Hussein - Are You? (none / 0)

my given middle name is hussein. Look i admire the attempts from people to prove that having hussein as a middle name is no bad thing, but i see this as having major backfire potential. Forgive me if i am jaded by being a muslim in the west in this particular time, but i just dont see how this will help him.

Re: Hussein - Are You? (2.00 / 1)

fantastic.  I despise the efforts to keep Obama's middle name a secret, which makes things much worse.  if everyone knows about it and why it doesn't automatically make him a muslim it's no longer ammunition.  This, combined with the media blitz to promote his wholesome life story will go a long way in taking the wind out of swiftboaters' sails, who must already be flabbergasted that their trusty old playbook is failing them this time.

I love it.  Reminds me of the movie The Three Amigos.  Remember?  The whole village dresses like the Amigos for the final battle agaist the tyrant El Guapo.

Ben Smith ran a transcript at Politico (none / 0)

from Fox News this morning:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0 608/Great_moments_in_cable_news_part_973 .html

Here is the best part:

GRETCHEN CARLSON: Yeah, a lot of young folks, Brian, taking "Hussein" as their own middle name now. I find this really interesting. It's a movement, but it's several hundred people, so I don't know how big of a movement it really is. But they're showing solidarity with Barack Obama. In other words, saying there is nothing wrong with having the middle name of Hussein. So people like Ashley Holmes of Indianapolis, here is her quote, "My name is such a vanilla white girl American name. To show how little meaning Hussein really has I'm choosing to make that my middle name."

BRIAN KILMEADE: Thanks for the explanation.

GRETCHEN CARLSON: Well, you know, I think that points pretty clearly about how some young people feel about all this. I didn't know that there was anything wrong with having an American name but apparently some people believe that there is.

Nice spin they have there.

Re: Hussein - Are You? (none / 0)

This qualifies as a bottom of the barrel attack diary.

It's time to move on from petty insults toward people who support the nominee of the Democratic Party -- especially on a site that purports to be about helping Democrats.
